Ana de la Vega plays with English Chamber Orchestra. Kings Place, Sunday May 31st

Terrific news from Australian flautist, Ana de la Vega. It is a busy time for the Trust with a full calendar of concerts coming up. Ana’s concert with the English Chamber Orchestra shouldn’t be missed.

I write to you from Hamburg where I have rehearsals this weekend. I have just returned from an 11 concert sold-out tour of Australia which was simply fantastic. I was the first time I have played in Australia in 10 years and so very sentimental.I am playing another concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra next Sunday 31st May at 7:30pm at the Kings Place. I play the Mozart Flute Concerto In D and the Mozart Andante in C.

As a proud Australian Ana is the artistic director of the London International Players who have just had a rave review in The STRAD, and her solo career has seen her onto many of Europe’s most prestigious stages!

Ana de la Vega, Biography
Few flautists of her generation have performed so extensively worldwide as soloist and chamber musician. Ana de la Vega’s recent Wigmore Hall debut was reviewed as ‘Outstanding’ (Classical Source), her Cadogan Hall London performance as ‘true artistry’ (Musical Opinion), and her Berlin Philharmonie debut as ‘first-class’.

Ana was student of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris where studied for her Premier Prix under Catherine Cantin, as well as with Philippe Pierlot and Raymond Guiot. At the age of 23 she won the position of Principal Flute with the Orquestra Sinfonica do Norte in Portugal. Since then she has held Principal Flute positions with the EPK Europa Philharmonie in Baden-Württemberg in Germany, and the Philharmonie der Nationen in Hamburg.

Ana is founder and artistic director of the London International Players, a dynamic London ensemble which brings together the finest musicians of her generation. On the wings of her dynamism they have already in their first season performed in Europes greatest halls to high regard, making headlines in the UK and abroad with their ‘explosive and ‘dazzling’ performances (World Of Classical Music, Wigmore Hall review).

ABC Classics announces three-album recording deal with Jayson Gilliam

Needless to say, it is very exciting and I am looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with ABC Classics. I’ll be making the recording of the first solo-piano disc in Germany next month. It is a beautiful programme of masterworks by Bach, Schubert and Chopin, and this recital is your only chance to hear the CD programme live. The CD is not due to be released for another year so if you can’t wait that long, you will simply have to drag yourself to this concert!

The recital will take place in the gorgeous home of tireless music supporters Bob and Elisabeth Boas at 22 Mansfield St, Marylebone, London W1G 9NR, where the music will be complemented by a very fine and diverse art collection and followed by drinks and canapés to round off the evening.

Dear Friends,

I was so pleased to see some of our Friends at the “Rising Australian Stars” concert at the ROSL last week where no fewer than four previous recipients of Tait awards played to a very appreciative audience. The music was simply glorious and I hope that you feel, as I do, the warm glow of satisfaction at being part of the nurturing of such wonderful young talent and how, with your generosity, The Tait Memorial Trust has played no small part in moving them along their musical path. With your help we have been able to help them gain the very best musical tuition and to expose them to the challenging and vibrant musical scene of the UK. What their natural talent and hard work, their families and their initial musical education in Australia began we have been able to continue. Apart from their exceptional musical talent one cannot help but be impressed with their enthusiasm, their energy, their strong sense of purpose and their total commitment to the pursuit of excellence. I so enjoyed speaking with Som, Chad, Yelian and Emily, as well as the other performers, after the concert and I am sure you will join me in wishing them all well.

What we have achieved in the past we are to continue. We have received 30 applications for this year’s awards and the standard is, as usual, exceptionally high. Our dedicated team is busy considering all those who are auditioning and we expect to be able to help a new group of very talented and committed young musicians and dancers towards a professional career such as that about to be enjoyed by the recipient of our Leanne Benjamin award for Ballet, Josephine Frick, as she shortly begins her contract with the ENB.

This leads me to the actual purpose of this letter. It is time to renew your Tait Friends membership with The Tait Memorial Trust. It is no exaggeration to write that you, our Friends, are the vital component of our commitment to our young Australian performing artists who come to study here in the UK and we trust you will be able to continue your generous support. In addition, if you know anyone else who would like to be part of this very satisfying activity in nurturing the talent of these wonderful young people please encourage them to do so and ask them to contact me on using the contact form below. To send your application online please share with us at info@taitmemorialtrust.org all of your relevant documents Dropbox folder. Please clearly label each file ie Biography, Track names, Photo etc. Please try and stick to standard formats for your recordings ie mp3 is preferable or provide links to Soundcloud or YouTube

In most cases the grant is paid directly to you in the UK or in the case of Ballet awards directly to the relevant institutions. We ask that Awardees submit a brief report to the Trustees at the end of the year.

As of 2013, with the creation of the new Tait Scholar award at the Royal College of Music, we do fund directly to the institution. For 2015 please do inform us on your application if you wish to also be considered for this award.

Ensemble Eroica Easter Concert

Young Australian Conductor, recent Solti Competition Finalist and Tait Winter Prom participant Toby Thatcher currently directs London-based group Ensemble Eroica. Their next programme takes place on Easter weekend, with music by Mozart and Strauss, and a guest solo appearance by Scottish Chamber Orchestra Principal Horn Alec Frank-Gemmill.

Toby Thatcher is carving out a name for himself as an up and coming young conductor in the London scene.We’re sure they would hugely appreciate your support.

The 2014 Tait Winter Prom was a landmark event for the Tait Memorial Trust at St John’s Smith Square, proudly supported by Australia’s largest bank, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. To see and hear our talented Awardees performing at one of London’s most prestigious concert platforms was thrilling…truly a great night for the Trust and for our young Australians we support.

Now in our 23rd year Awards have increased by 30% from 2013 largely due to the more than three fold rise in Tait Friends subscriptions in 2014 and our loyal audience who come to our events and generously give towards our scholarship fund.

Jayson Gillham prepares for Le Louvre

Jayson Gillham played magnificently last night at 49 Queen’s Gate Terrace, London. The home of Sir Vernon and Lady Ellis it has become one of London’s most prestigious boutique chamber venues.

He played a program of Debussy, Chabrier & Ducas. He is such a wonderful artist and speaks and introduces each piece with humour.

We are thrilled that Jayson Gillham is playing for us at the Tait Winter Prom The concert will be at St John’s Smith

Changing Feet is a commission from the Tait Memorial Trust, and is receiving its premiere on 9th December 2014.

For solo flute and chamber orchestra, Penkin describes it as:

“Changing Feet is about changing pace. Leaving the world’s most isolated city to live in one of the most industrious and compact environments requires a huge mental change. This piece tries to reflect not only the mentality of someone who grew up in Perth, but the experience of moving to London and ultimately returning home back to Australia. This work explores what one could miss of Perth, be it the silence, the space or the natural beauty…”

Premiere of a new composition that was commissioned by the Tait Trust, by Australian composer, Kevin Penkin (Tait Scholar 2013/14). Performed by the Tait Chamber Orchestra, Nicola Crowe, Flute (Tait Awardee 2013), plays Kevin Penkin’s latest work entitled, ‘Changing Feet’ with The Tait Chamber Orchestra at St John’s Smith Square, London. Tait Winter Prom supported by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Live performance Tuesday 9th December 2014.

Kevin Penkin (b. 1996)

Perth-born composer Kevin Penkin is truly an up-and-coming star in the contemporary music scene. Currently studying at the Royal College of Music, London, he is a current Tait Awardee, and his work has been featured in everything from video games to concert halls.
His entrepreneurial approach to composition is both refreshing and exciting, with his work commissioned by the Perth Symphony Orchestra and the Perth Chamber Orchestra. His UK Concert Debut was by the RCM Student Film Orchestra earlier this year.

On Tuesday, October 14th Tait Friends met at Australia House in the Downer Room. The evening was joint hosted by the Tait Trust and the office of the Victorian Agent General. Sadly the night before Mary, Lady Downer, the mother of the Australian High Commissioner, passed away. The Downer family were to have been our guests of honour. Lady Downer, the wife of Australia’s longest serving High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, was greatly loved and had very recently enjoyed a special lunch with many of her friends at Stoke Lodge. All of us at the Trust are deeply saddened at the loss of this great lady.

The evening, with the blessing and support of the High Commissioner, went ahead with Geoffrey Conaghan, Victorian Agent General stepping in for The Hon Alexander Downer AC. Geoffrey gave an impassioned speech where he warmly acknowledged our new Principal Partner, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and then congratulated our sponsors and applauded our Friends for being so vital to the Trust’s success. We also wish to thank him for providing the delicious wines from the State of Victoria.For the Tait Memorial Trust this was already a significant evening. We had invited our Friends to join us as we welcomed our two new Patrons, John Frost AM and Leanne Benjamin OBE. The agreement with the Commonwealth Bank came about a few weeks before the event plus the selection of Josephine Frick, to be the inaugural recipient of The Leanne Benjamin Awards, had only recently been decided. Josephine was presented with a cheque for £8,000 being given to her to contribute towards her fees at The Royal Ballet School .We were entertained by three outstanding young Australian artists, Lauren Zolezzi, Gerard Schneider and Chad Vindin. Their performances truly were world class and gave us all further proof in the value of our support and the need to help these talented artists.

Dear Friends,

I hope you’ve all had a lovely start to your autumn/spring (depending on hemisphere!) – I certainly have! Most especially the start of rehearsals for my debut with the Royal Opera House world premiere of Glare in the role of Lea. Very exciting!! Helping develop a new opera and new story line has been such a creative and different rehearsal experience. I hope that if you’re in London you might be able to come!

There’s also lots of exciting stuff in the pipeline for 2015. In particular, (and what I’m currently allowed to reveal), is that I have accepted a La Bohème contract for my debut with English Touring Opera. We will be travelling all around the UK. I can’t wait to visit all the towns that I haven’t had the opportunity to go to yet. I am also excited to be performing in this opera with two fellow Adelaidians; Grant Doyle and Nicholas Lester.
