On Wednesday 26 September friends of the Trust were given a rare privilege: a tour of Westminster Abbey, courtesy of the Dean and Chapter, and our friend Rev Graeme Napier. He is a superb guide who showed us all its hidden treasures. The tour was followed by a champagne reception – with a musical interlude from two of the Trust's young recipients, Brad Cooper (tenor) and Claire Howard (piano) in one of the lovely apartments in the Abbey precinct nearby.

Miranda Keys soprano
Paul O'Neill tenor
Richard John piano

A vocal recital with works by Barber, Beethoven, Bellini, Massenet, Mendelssohn, Puccini, Rakhmaninov, Rossini, Rangström, Sibelius, Smetana & Verdi

In June soprano Miranda Keys represented Australia in the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Miranda has sung for the UK’s major opera companies, including The Royal Opera, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and English Touring Opera, as well extensively in concert, with venues including Barbican Hall, QEH, Usher Hall and St John’s Smith Square.

Tenor Paul O’Neill is a Trust recipient through Opera Foundation Australia. He studied in Western Australia and was a young artist with WA Opera before studying at the National Opera Studio in London. Currently Paul is at the new Cardiff International Academy of Voice under Dennis O’Neill. In the past season he has sung with Opera Holland Park, Chelsea Opera Group and Castleward Opera, and later this year will sing the Duke in Rigoletto for WA Opera.

Pianist Richard Johns began professionally as a concert performer and accompanist, more recently expanding his profile to include musical direction and composition: he is currently working on the imminent worldwide publication of his musical adaptation of The Railway Children for Samuel French Ltd. In 2005 he was granted a prestigious Creative Development Fellowship by the West Australian Department for Culture and the Arts in recognition of his versatile musicianship.

FRANCIS POULENC Babar the Elephant
ALAN RIDOUT Ferdinand the Bull

CLAUDE DEBUSSY Cello Sonata
MILY BALAKIREV Scherzo for piano

Renowned broadcaster, writer and music critic John Amis joined eminent Australian pianist Leslie Howard with young Trust awardees violinist Katerina Mitchell and cellist Thomas Rann for this first concert of 2007.

John Amis is well known for his programme My Music for the BBC, with an illustrious career spanning 7 decades – his autobiography My Music in London 1945-2000 has just been published. Pianist Leslie Howard has achieved worldwide acclaim with his 97-disc survey of Liszt’s music for Hyperion, enjoying a busy schedule as performer, composer, conductor and musicologist.

The programme, devised and narrated by Amis (and inspired by a previous recording collaboration with Howard), included Poulenc’s Babar the Elephant (after Jean de Brunhoff’s famous tale) and Ferdinand the Bull, Munro Leaf’s well-known story with Alan Ridout’s violin music. These were presented alongside Balakirev’s Scherzo No.2 for piano and Debussy’s Cello Sonata.

A buffet supper followed the concert, which took place in the Music Room of Vernon & Hazel Ellis's home in South Kensington. We are extremely grateful to the Vernon Ellis Foundation for hosting Tait's Rush Hour Concert Series in 2007.

In commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar and this extraordinary figure in British maritime history, The Tait Memorial Trust and JB Classical Events presented An Evening with Horatio Nelson, a dramatization of a major new opera/music drama telling the story of Nelson's later career and love affair with Lady Emma Hamilton. Stuart Greenbaum has taken Ross Baglin's poetic and moving text, weaving around it his contemporary tonal voice, influenced by both classical and popular styles. The resultant work is strikingly modern in its examination of the ethics of war, the nature of heroism, and the power of love and loss.
